What Is an NTN and Why Do You Need One?
A National Tax Number (NTN) is a unique identifier issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to registered taxpayers in Pakistan. Think of it as your tax ID card — once assigned, it never changes and stays with you for life.
Without an NTN, you are classified as a non-filer by FBR, which means you pay significantly higher withholding tax rates on banking transactions, vehicle registration, property purchases, and dozens of other activities. Simply registering — even if you owe no tax — saves you money immediately.
Good news: NTN registration is completely free of charge and can be done 100% online through FBR's IRIS portal. There is no need to visit any FBR office.

Step-by-Step NTN Registration Process (Online via IRIS)
Visit FBR IRIS Portal
Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk. On the login page, click "Registration for Unregistered Person". Do not use the main login — that is for already-registered taxpayers.
Enter Your CNIC and Mobile Number
Enter your 13-digit CNIC number (without dashes) and your mobile number. This must be the number registered with NADRA against your CNIC. IRIS will send an OTP to verify your identity.
Select Taxpayer Type
Choose your category: Individual (for salaried/freelance), AOP (Association of Persons, for partnerships), or Company. Most people select "Individual." Your CNIC number becomes your NTN if you're an individual.
Fill In Personal and Income Details
Complete all required fields: name, date of birth, gender, address, and source of income. For salaried persons, enter your employer's NTN (ask your HR department). For business income, provide your business name and address. Be accurate — FBR cross-checks this data with NADRA, banks, and utility companies.
Set Password and Submit
Create a strong password for your IRIS account — you will use this to file your annual tax return. Review all entered information, then click "Submit Registration." Your NTN is generated instantly on the confirmation screen. Save or print this page.
Verify Your NTN
After registration, verify your NTN on FBR's taxpayer search at fbr.gov.pk/search. Enter your CNIC — if you appear in the results, your registration is complete and you are now recognized as a filer in FBR's system.
⚠️ Important: Registering for NTN is not the same as filing your income tax return. To appear on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) and enjoy filer benefits, you must also file your annual tax return by September 30 of each year for the preceding tax year (July–June).
Benefits of Having an NTN in Pakistan
- Lower withholding tax on banking transactions — Non-filers pay 0.6% on cash withdrawals above Rs. 50,000 per day; filers pay 0%
- Reduced tax on vehicle purchase — Filer rates are significantly lower than non-filer rates
- Lower tax on property transactions — Filer rates on buying/selling property can be 50–60% lower
- Lower dividend tax — 15% for filers vs. 30% for non-filers
- Legal protection — Avoid FBR audit notices for unexplained assets or income
- Business credibility — Clients, banks, and government agencies require NTN for contracts
- Faster loan processing — Banks give preference to verified NTN holders
What If You Forget Your IRIS Password?
Visit IRIS and click "Forgot Password." Enter your CNIC and registered mobile number. An OTP will be sent to reset your password. If your registered mobile number has changed, you will need to visit the nearest FBR Tax Facilitation Center with your original CNIC to update your contact details before resetting.
NTN for Companies and AOPs
For Private Limited Companies, the NTN is different from the individual CNIC-based NTN. After company incorporation through SECP, a separate NTN must be obtained for the company entity. The company's Principal Officer (typically the CEO or MD) must register the company on IRIS using their own IRIS credentials, then add the company as a represented entity. The company's NTN is a numeric code assigned by FBR.
For Partnership Firms (AOPs), one partner acts as the authorized representative and registers the AOP on IRIS. All partners' CNICs must be provided during registration.
